Corpulence is considered the second principal cause of preventable death in the USA. A great many people are displeased with their present weight, but most are not certain how to change it. Being fit and healthy is really about being at a weight that is right for you. Watching weight requires much effort. People who lose weight quickly by crash diets or other extreme ways commonly gain back all (and usually more) of the weight they lost, as they have not permanently changed their habits. The body likes slow alterations in terms of food and physical exercise. For instance, somebody who has not done physical activities for years should not hurry to run miles a day and pound the treadmill. The intention to do so will leave you feeling disappointed and demotivated, and you are also much likely to damage yourself and set your fitness levels back further. The same occurs to people who suddenly begin starving themselves. Diets that severely limit calories or the types of food 'allowed' can lead to shortage of nutrients and vitamins that your body needs. The body uses food for energy. Any undue energy is stored as fat. This means if you eat more food than your body needs to function properly, you will gain weight. To lose weight, you need to make your body use up these stores of fat. The most efficacious way to do this is to reduce the amount of calories you eat and increase your levels of activity. Consume water instead of fizzy drinks and fruit cordials, swap whole milk for semi-skimmed, eat less lunch than usual, drink tea and coffee without sugar, have smaller portions of the food you enjoy, cut out unhealthy treats - such as chocolates, sugary biscuits and crisps - between meals, cut down alcohol intake. You should think of weight loss in terms of permanently changing your eating habits. Whereas weight-loss goals are usually set in term of weeks, the main objective is to maintain these alterations over a long time. Someone who begins to exercise more, but sustains the same diet and calorie consumption, will almost certainly lose weight. No matter if you hate gyms, you will gain benefit from doing even light regular physical activity, such as a short 20 minute walk. Each time you do physical activities more than usual, you burn calories and fat. There are a lot of ways to increase the amount of physical activity you do. Team sports, yoga classes, jogging, walking and swimming will all make you fitter. All these things will influence your well-being in a positive way.
