| Everybody, including children, can suffer from hair loss, called alopecia. Baldness is excessive loss of hair from your scalp. Heredity, a disease or even medicine can trigger baldness.
Androgenetic alopecia is the commonest type of hair loss. It is responsible for about 95% of the cases of baldness in the United States of America. Males suffer from androgenetic alopecia far more often than females. Two factors must be present for it: a genetic predisposition and the male hormone testosterone (yes, women have a low level of testosterone in their bodies).
Usually, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which stimulates the growth of body and face hair, but also diminishes hair follicles on the scalp, causing thinner, fuzzier growth. Androgenetic alopecia is not considered a medical disorder; it is more a cosmetic issue. Propecia (Finasterine) is one the most widespread methods of treatment approved by FDA. Taken daily in a tablet form, Propecia deteriorates the conversion of testosterone to DHT, hence helping to prevent the shrinking of hair follicles. Propecia is for males ONLY and must not be taken by women, because it can bring on birth defects.
